Photo of the Day #29

At the entrance to the Bay of Navarino is a small weather worn island with an interesting rock arch cut into it by the sea.

The Bay is famous for the naval battle fought here in October 1827, during the Greek war of Independence, when British, French and Russian ships decisively defeated the Ottoman and Egyptian fleet. The outcome ultimately led to the independence of Greece.

Interestingly, it was the last major battle in history entirely fought by sailing ships.

We stopped on our way to Pylos, a lovely town in the Bay, to take this photo of Lady Roslyn peeping through the arch.
