Today's Picture of the Day is taken above Monemvasia Island, which is connected via a causeway to the south east coast of the Peloponnese.
Yes, it was taken with the drone. Yes, it shows the building and walls of medieval Monemvasia clinging to the mountainside. Yes, it shows Lady Roslyn anchored just off the harbour wall of the new town, in the top left of the image.
What it does not, in any way or form, capture, is the spectacular beauty of this giant slab of rock, which some have likened to Gibraltar, and hanging on below its cliffs, the old walled town that is Monemvasia.
The last 51 days sailing Lady Roslyn from Muggia in Northern Italy have taken us to the old towns of Rovinj, Trogir, Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik in Croatia as well as Kotor, Herceg Novi and Budva in Montenegro.
Monemvasia, hands-down-no-questions-asked, knocked our socks off as the best old town of the trip. It is authentic, it is beautiful, it is low-key and it is not (yet) overrun by hordes of tourists pouring off cruise ships and being whisked from site to site.
Most of all Monemvasia was for us, completely unexpected.
We wandered through the town and climbed up the winding steps to the Agia Sofia church on the plateau above and were the only ones up there, which is remarkable considering it was the middle of a beautiful day in early August.
What we did not do was give Monemvasia enough time and so we have vowed to return.
